More about Orpheum Theatre Omaha

The history of the Orpheum Theatre in Omaha goes all the way back to the late 1800s. The original theater was called The Creighton Theater, and it was built in 1895. In those days, it was primarily used for plays and vaudeville acts. The Orpheum Vaudeville Circuit bought the theater from John Creighton in the early 1900s and renamed it to The Orpheum. Back then, tickets to most acts were never more than fifty cents. In the mid-1920s, the original building was lost in a fire, but the Orpheum Circuit rebuilt it in 1927. It cost $2 million dollars to rebuild, and even though that is an astronomical amount of money today, it was an incredible amount in the twenties.

The theater built in 1927 still stands today, although it has undergone some extensive renovations since then, including a $10 million dollar renovation in 2002. As people began to favor motion picture movies over vaudeville, the Orpheum Theatre switched it’s focus to motion pictures. It remained a movie theater until the early 1970s, at which point it had to close down because of the dire state of the economy.

After reopening in 1975 to an audience awaiting the appearance of Red Skelton, the theater has continued to thrive. Today it is one of the preferred locations in Omaha for the performing arts. The theater has been restored as accurately as possible to it’s original 1927 appearance, and is currently able to hold over 3,000 spectators for most events.
