Omaha is Nebraska’s largest city and it is located in Douglas County. The city had a population of 408,958 during the U.S. census held in 2010. It ranks as at the 42nd position among the largest cities in the nation. In 2010, its metropolitan area ranked at the 60th position among the largest metropolitan areas in the United States having a population of about 865,350 people, who live in eight counties. The people who live within a fifty-mile radius of the Omaha’s city center are more than 1.2 million.

The pioneer period of this city started in 1854 when speculators who came from the neighboring Council Bluffs in Iowa founded the city along the Missouri River. The central location of the city of Omaha in the U.S. during the nineteenth century led it into becoming a major national transportation hub. In the rest of the nineteenth century the jobbing and transportation centers of this city were highly important along with its breweries and railroads.

Currently, there are 5 Fortune 500 companies in the city of Omaha and it is the home of 4 Fortune 1000 headquarters. The city has a diverse modern economy, which to a great extent depends on skilled knowledge jobs. The city’s economy also benefits a lot from tourism with the top attractions in the city being the College World Series and the Henry Doorly Zoo. The tourist attractions in this city include sports, history, cultural and outdoor experiences.

Omaha also hosts the Omaha Community Playhouse, which is the largest community theater in the nation. When it comes to museums, one of the most famous is the Omaha Children’s Museum, which offers children the opportunity to discover the manner in which the world works, challenge themselves and learn as they play.

Every year, Omaha hosts the Jazz, Blues and Gospel Festivals, which celebrate local music. This city is regarded as being the heart of the Midwest and you can enjoy staying here. The other event that can interest you in this city is BIG Omaha, which is held every year on the second weekend of July at the Quest Center. This event features entrepreneurs and inventors among others for a giant exposition. You can just attend this annual event to see what others have to offer or exhibit your wares in it.

The other annual event that Omaha hosts is the arts festival, which is held at the University Place in the month of August. It features performances from local dancers, artists and singers. The event is held every August weekend and is very impressive to those who love the arts. The other event that you can enjoy in Omaha is the rodeo contest, which is hosted at downtown Omaha’s Outdoor Theater. It features music entertainment, bronco busting and bull riding.
